Lord Shiva is the god of meditation and the arts. According to an old Indian epic, when Shiva was teaching Parvati, his consort, how to practice yoga, he was overheard by a dolphin in the river Ganges. On hearing the lessons of the god, the dolphin was turned into a man and called Matsyendra, the “Lord of the Fishes”. This disciple would later become Shiva Mahadeva Nath, the creator of yoga.

Shiva’s attributes are represented with countless little details: the trident which symbolizes his power; the drum which marks the rhythm of the universe; the snake that Parvati tied around his neck to prevent him from swallowing poison; the beads of rudraksha, a sacred seed with medicinal powers; and the bun in his hair from which the river Ganges flows and the god intercepts as if falls in order not to flood the Earth.
