Porcelain Design Sculptures

In our Design collection, porcelain becomes a medium for artistic experimentation, where form, color and finish are often as important as the subject itself. These sculptures are conceived through a contemporary design perspective, exploring new visual languages while remaining rooted in the craftsmanship that defines all our creations.

Animals, human forms and abstract concepts are reimagined through bold silhouettes, unexpected proportions and distinctive decorative treatments. Matte black surfaces, metallic finishes, iridescent effects and hand-painted color palettes allow each sculpture to establish its own visual identity, creating pieces that engage with contemporary interiors through presence as much as subject matter.

Every sculpture is hand-made in our workshop in Spain, where a multidisciplinary team works from the earliest creative concepts through to the final firing at 2372°F. During this transformation, porcelain reveals its final character, bringing together material, decoration and artistic intent in a single object.

While our classic porcelain sculptures focus on narrative traditions and timeless themes, the Design collection is defined by creative freedom, formal exploration and a contemporary approach to porcelain.

Signature finishes that define our design sculptures

The Design collection is distinguished by its approach to decoration. Rather than serving as a finishing touch, color and surface treatment are often integral to the concept of the sculpture itself, shaping the way each piece is perceived within a space.

Matte black finishes play a central role in collections such as BoldblackBy absorbing rather than reflecting light, these surfaces emphasize silhouette, volume and proportion, allowing the sculptural form to take precedence. The result is a strong graphic presence that changes according to its surroundings and viewing angle.

Metallic finishes create a different effect. Whether applied in deep metallic red or other reflective treatments, they introduce movement and visual variation as light shifts throughout the day. In some sculptures, metallic decoration transforms a familiar form into something more architectural and contemporary.

Other creations explore iridescent glazes and hand-painted multicolor decoration. Working from a palette of more than 4,000 proprietary colors developed in our workshop, our artisans apply color by hand, building depth and contrast across complex surfaces. During firing, the interaction between glaze, enamel and porcelain gives each sculpture its final appearance, concentrating color and decoration as the piece reaches its finished dimensions.

These decorative approaches allow the same material to express very different visual languages. Some sculptures rely on restraint and monochromatic surfaces, while others embrace color, reflection and ornamentation. Together, they define the distinctive aesthetic territory of our Design collection.

Animal sculptures: bold forms in matte and metallic finishes

Animal sculptures occupy a distinctive place within our Design collection. Rather than pursuing naturalistic representation, many of these creations reinterpret familiar subjects through simplified volumes, graphic silhouettes and highly considered decorative treatments.

Collections such as Origami illustrate this approach particularly well. Through geometric forms and carefully balanced proportions, animals are reduced to their essential lines, creating sculptures that feel contemporary while remaining instantly recognizable. Here, the emphasis shifts from realistic description to sculptural interpretation.

Other creations explore different visual languages. Collections such as Boldblack and Boldblue use monochromatic finishes to emphasize silhouette and visual impact, while Underwater introduces a more expressive interpretation of the natural world, where color, movement and decoration become integral parts of the sculptural concept.

These sculptures are often chosen for their visual presence as much as for their subject matter. Their strong forms allow them to function as focal points within a space, while their finishes contribute texturecontrast and personality.

How design porcelain sculptures express character and emotion

Many of the most recognizable creations within our Design collection are built around characters, emotions and artistic identities. Rather than pursuing realistic representation, these sculptures explore gesture, attitude, movement and visual expression through a distinctly contemporary language.

Creations such as Eternal Fluidity and Ink demonstrate how porcelain can convey movement and emotion through simplified forms and carefully balanced proportions. Their sculptural language focuses on rhythm, silhouette and visual continuity, allowing the viewer to discover new relationships between form and space from different perspectives.

Themes of connection and affection also play an important role. Sculptures such as Embraced reinterpret human relationships through a contemporary aesthetic, where color, composition and form work together to communicate emotion with remarkable clarity.

The Guest represents another distinctive approach within the Design collection. Created by Jaime Hayon and continually reinterpreted by invited artists, it transforms a single porcelain character into a platform for creative collaboration. Each version introduces new graphic languages, visual references and artistic perspectives, demonstrating how porcelain can become a medium for contemporary cultural expression.

Narrative characters also occupy an important place within this category. Creations such as Soul Rider by Dulk introduce a more imaginative dimension, where contemporary sculpture, storytelling and artistic identity come together. These works demonstrate how porcelain can support highly personal creative universes while maintaining the same commitment to craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Several creations within this category are produced as limited edition porcelain sculptures, reflecting the complexity of their artistic and technical development while preserving the same hand-made process that defines the entire collection.

Design collaborations and creative development

Every sculpture in our Design collection begins with an idea but bringing that idea to life requires the expertise of many different disciplines. Around 40 people contribute to the creative development of each new model, exploring form, proportion, decoration and technical solutions before a sculpture reaches its final expression. From there, around 230 artisans participate in transforming that vision into porcelain within our workshop in Spain.

The creative process is built on constant collaboration. Sculptors, mold makers, decorators and painters work together throughout the development of a piece, refining each element as it evolves. The final firing at 2372°F forms part of that journey, revealing the sculpture's finished proportions, colors and surface treatments.

Collaborations with designers and artists have played an important role in shaping the Design collection. Among them, Jaime Hayon has contributed some of its most recognizable creations. Through projects such as The Fantasy, Embraced and The Guest, he introduced a visual language defined by expressive forms, playful proportions and a contemporary approach to porcelain that continues to influence the category today.

The Guest became one of the most distinctive platforms within our Design universe. Originally conceived by Jaime Hayon, the character has since been reinterpreted by invited artists from different creative disciplines, each bringing a unique visual language and artistic perspective. This ongoing dialogue between porcelain and contemporary creativity continues to generate some of the most original creations in the collection.

Collections such as Boldblack, Origami, Underwater, The Dreamer by Laolu and Insects illustrate the diversity of creative directions that can emerge from a single material. Each collection brings its own visual language, demonstrating how porcelain can support everything from geometric abstraction to artistic collaborations and contemporary interpretations of nature. What makes design porcelain sculptures distinctive

Porcelain plays a central role in shaping the identity of our Design collection. Beyond its technical qualities, it offers a balance between precision, surface richness and decorative versatility that allows very different creative ideas to coexist within the same material.

We formulate multiple types of porcelain adapted to different artistic and production requirements, using a composition based on kaolin, quartz and feldspar sourced primarily in Spain. This knowledge, developed through decades of experimentation, allows us to approach each sculpture according to its specific creative needs while maintaining the consistency required by a hand-made process.

The material also provides an exceptional foundation for decoration. Matte black surfaces, metallic finishes, iridescent glazes and hand-painted color treatments all interact differently with porcelain, producing visual effects that become part of the sculpture itself rather than simply covering it. This is particularly important within the Design collection, where finish and form are often conceived together from the earliest stages of development.

Firing at 2372°F transforms the porcelain into its final state, creating the density and surface quality required for the decorative precision that characterizes these sculptures. The result is a material capable of supporting bold forms, refined details and a wide range of finishes while remaining faithful to the artistic vision behind each piece.

Within the Design collection, porcelain is not simply the medium through which an idea is expressed. It is an active part of the creative process, influencing how form, color and decoration come together to create a finished sculpture.

Choosing a porcelain sculpture for your space

Selecting a sculpture from our Design collection often begins with considering the role the piece will play within its surroundings. Some sculptures are conceived as focal points, while others contribute through color, texture or the dialogue they establish with nearby objects and materials.

Finishing is often one of the first aspects to consider. Matte black sculptures tend to read as graphic forms, emphasizing silhouette and volume while integrating naturally into a wide range of interiors. Metallic finishes create a different effect, reflecting ambient light and introducing a stronger visual presence. Multicolored and hand-painted creations often become points of attention through their decorative richness and use of color.

Scale also shapes how a sculpture is experienced. Larger works naturally command attention and can function as standalone pieces, while smaller sculptures may be integrated into broader decorative compositions. Whether displayed individually or as part of a curated arrangement, allowing sufficient space around a sculpture helps reveal its proportions, decoration and character.

Many interior designers and design professionals approach porcelain sculptures in the same way they would approach other significant design objects: considering their relationship with materials, light and architecture. A matte black sculpture may establish a dialogue with stone, wood or metal surfaces, while metallic and iridescent finishes can introduce contrast and visual movement within a more restrained environment.

Some clients are drawn to animal sculptures because of their sculptural presence, while others are attracted to the expressive qualities of human forms or artist collaborations. There is no single approach. The most successful choice is often the one that establishes the strongest connection with the space and the person who lives with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a Lladró sculpture is authentic?

Every authentic Lladró sculpture carries the Lladró logotype, which serves as the official mark of authenticity and origin. You will find this mark on the piece itself. Additional marks may also appear on the base of the sculpture; these are the personal signatures of the artisans who participated in its creation and reflect the hands involved in the process. While these craft marks provide information about how a sculpture was made, the Lladró logotype remains the official guarantee of authenticity.

What distinguishes Lladró Design sculptures from the classic range?

Our Design collection is defined by a contemporary approach to form, color and finish. Matte black surfaces, metallic treatments, iridescent glazes and graphic silhouettes play a central role in many of these sculptures, creating a visual language that differs from the softer palettes and more traditional decorative approaches often associated with our classic range.

Design sculptures also include collaborations with internationally recognized designers and artists, bringing new perspectives to porcelain while remaining rooted in craftsmanship. If you would like to explore our more traditional creations, discover our classic porcelain sculptures.

Are Lladró Design sculptures hand-made?

Yes. Every sculpture in our Design collection is hand-made in our workshop in Spain. Bringing a new model to life involves the work of around 230 artisans, who contribute their expertise throughout the creative process.

Each sculpture is fired at temperatures of up to 2372°F, where the porcelain undergoes its final transformation and naturally shrinks by approximately 15%. This process allows the sculpture to achieve its final proportions, colors and finishes while preserving the precision that characterizes our work.

How do I clean a matte black or metallic porcelain sculpture?

Care depends on the finish of the sculpture. Matte black and fully metallized surfaces should be cleaned using only a very soft cloth or a feather duster. Abrasive products should never be used, as they may damage the finish.

For sculptures decorated with gold, platinum or silver lustres, a soft cloth is generally sufficient for regular cleaning. If a metallic lustre darkens over time, it can be gently buffed using a soft cloth lightly dampened with alcohol.

For hand-painted surfaces without metallic finishes, lukewarm water and neutral soap can be used, together with a soft-bristle brush for delicate areas. Porcelain sculptures should never be placed in a dishwasher or microwave.

What finishes are available in the Design sculpture collection?

The Design collection explores a wide variety of decorative finishes. Matte surfaces, including matte black finishes used in collections such as Boldblack, emphasize silhouette and sculptural volume by absorbing light.

Metallic finishes, including metallic red, create changing reflections and a strong visual presence. Other sculptures feature iridescent glazes that produce subtle shifts in color and perception depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

Many creations also incorporate hand-painted decoration developed from a palette of more than 4,000 proprietary colors. These finishes allow each sculpture to express a distinct visual identity while remaining faithful to the same porcelain craftsmanship.

Are there limited edition design sculptures, and how many are made?

Yes. Some sculptures within our Design collection are produced as limited editions, including creations such as Soul Rider, Embraced and Little Devil Cat. Limited edition status means that a defined number of pieces will be produced.

Each sculpture is created using the same hand-made process as the rest of the collection and carries the same standards of craftsmanship and quality. To explore the full range, visit our dedicated page for limited edition porcelain sculptures.
